There are at least three different groups of people who disagree with one or more of the main conclusions of the Fourth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from February 2007: sceptic scientists, lobbyists, and conspiracy theorists.

Sceptic scientists
A few scientists – hopefully in good faith – claim one or some of the following:
• There is no global warming.
• The accuracy of the climate change projected by the IPCC is questionable.
• Global warming is not caused by humans but by natural processes.
• The cause of global warming is unknown.
• Global warming is beneficial to mankind.

Who is funding their research?

To combat global warming, renewable energy’s share of the energy mix must grow and fossil fuels’ share must shrink. The big potential losers are the industries built on fossil fuels: oil and coal production, steel and automobile manufacturing, etc.

In recent years, particularly in the United States, a lot of money was spent to label global warming a “theory” rather than a “fact”. The required emission reductions “harm the environment, hinder the progress of science and technology, and damage people’s health and welfare.”

The Royal Society, the National Academy of Sciences of the United Kingdom, found out that in 2005 an oil company donated about 3 million dollars to scientific organizations that deliberately “misrepresented the science of climate change by denying the evidence.” In 2008 the company stopped supporting several of these organizations – but not all.*

Lobbyism works. In 2003 a U.S. senator, ironically the chairman of the Senate’s Environment Committee at that time, said: “With all of the hysteria, all of the fear, all of the phoney science, could it be that man-made global warming is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people? It sure sounds like it.” **

Conspiracy theorists
Climate change is also a wonderful subject for conspiracy theories. Here a list of some popular theories about who invented global warming and why:
• The United Nations to create a world government
• Governments to raise taxes
• Environmentalists to prevent the industrial development in Africa
• Environmentalists to promote industrial development in Africa and to destroy the industrial countries
• Conservative politicians to gain political support from environmentalists for nuclear power
• Left-wing politicians to promote socialism
• Globalization opponents to destroy the industrialized countries
